I Love Local HFX: Open City 2018

I love this time of year when the weather warms up, the blossoms are on the trees and everyone is ready to spend some time outdoors. Open City, organized by I Love Local HFX, is such a fun annual spring event! For me, it's a chance to reconnect with local business owners I have come to know over the years and to visit some new exciting restaurants and shops here in Halifax and Dartmouth.

For the month of May, I have an awesome NSCC student working with me named Sarah. We teamed up to document our Open City adventure. Because there are SO MANY locations on the list, we ended up focusing more on downtown Dartmouth and the north end of Halifax this time around... I've included more of downtown Halifax and the Seaport Market in previous years and I'll be back in that area again in the fall for the annual City Harvest event.

I hope our photos inspire you to visit a local business that is new to you!

Sarah and I started our day at Halifax Seed where they had a planting station to get your garden started.

Breakfast #1: Salvatore's "Breakfast Sal-zone" with eggs, mozzarella, pancetta, sweet/spicy sausage, tomato, lettuce and caesar mayo. I wish they had these every weekend!

Breakfast #2: The Foggy Goggle's Mini Crepe with Windy View Farm local eggs, spinach, cheddar, roasted tomatoes, chili-garlic aioli, hollandaise and garden fresh chives.

Sweets at The Old Apothecary: classic and double-chocolate eclairs with Vietnamese coffee.
