A Guide to Exploring Pictou County, Nova Scotia

Welcome to Pictou County – a picturesque region of Nova Scotia’s North Shore, bursting with historical charm, culinary delights, and breathtaking natural landscapes. 

Join me as I explore the vibrant towns of New Glasgow, Stellarton, Pictou and the spirited community of River John. Highlights include delicious meals featuring local, seasonal produce, shopping for artisanal hand-crafted goods, learning about the Scottish heritage of Nova Scotia and enjoying the natural beauty of the Northumberland Shore.

Nestled along the Northumberland Strait near Merigomish Harbour, Fossil Farms Oceanside Retreat offers a truly rejuvenating experience for travellers seeking tranquility and a connection with nature. The retreat's unique charm lies in its harmonious blend of rustic elegance and sustainable practices. 

A friend and I spent two relaxing nights in a beautiful two-bedroom, eco-friendly cottage overlooking the coastline and vineyards. We enjoyed riding fat bikes around the property, relaxing in the barn with books and board games and watching the sunset from the top of the vineyard while enjoying a glass of wine. Guests can also enjoy a pool and sauna, kayaking, stargazing, and hiking along nearby fossil-rich cliffs. I highly recommend spending a few days at this lovely oceanside retreat.

A great place to start your day! This warm and welcoming coffee shop offers freshly brewed, locally-roasted coffee and tasty pastries made in house. Cute, comfy interior and friendly service. So good – I visited twice!

New Glasgow Farmers Market
261 Glasgow St, New Glasgow

Open on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm, the New Glasgow Farmers Market offers local produce and meats, baked goods, prepared foods to enjoy on site or for takeaway, and a wide variety of unique, handmade items by local artists and crafters. It’s a great spot to hang out for a bit, listen to live music and enjoy some tasty Pictou County eats!

Knoydart Farm Cheese

This family-owned farm offers a variety of artisanal organic cheese products made from the milk of their own free range, grass-fed cows. I visited this beautiful property overlooking the Northumberland coastline and had a lovely chat with Frazer Hunter who treated me to a tour of the farm and sent me home with the most delicious cheese!

Nova Scotia Museum of Industry

Step back in time and explore the rich industrial history of Nova Scotia at this fascinating museum. Engage with interactive exhibits, learn about the province's manufacturing heritage, and discover the stories of the spirited, hardworking people who shaped the region. I personally really enjoyed the exhibits highlighting food and agriculture. Be sure to check out these cool old soda bottles!

This park in New Glasgow is dedicated to preserving and sharing the history and contributions of the local African Nova Scotian community and commemorates the cultural future of Nova Scotians of African descent. Walk along the interpretive panels that showcase stories of resilience, culture, and achievements. Learn about traditions, art, and music that have been vital in shaping Pictou County’s diversity and the continuing fight for racial equality and justice in the community.

Located in the heart of New Glasgow, Carmichael Park is a quiet riverside greenspace with a gazebo and several historical monuments. Take a leisurely stroll along the winding paths and flower gardens in the shade of the large mature trees.

I came upon this charming boutique while wandering along Provost Street in New Glasgow. With a carefully curated selection of home-decor items, local foodie products, unique gifts, plants and garden supplies, this shop mixes contemporary design with rustic charm.

Backstage Brewing in Stellarton is a craft beer enthusiast's paradise, offering a wide selection of local brews and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. From hoppy IPAs to smooth stouts and refreshing ales, there’s something for every beer drinker. We enjoyed a tasting flight on the sunny patio with a few bar snacks.

This marina and restaurant, located along the East River of New Glasgow, is a haven for boating enthusiasts and food lovers alike. With both indoor and outdoor seating, this is a great spot to share a tasty meal and drinks with friends. I was keen to try their take on fish & chips: Coconut Haddock with Dill Pickle Aioli and Coconut Slaw — and it didn’t disappoint! The Strawberry Limeade cocktail paired perfectly, a light and summery drink perfect for the patio.

Melmerby Beach Provincial Park
6280 Little Harbour Rd, Little Harbour

Located in Little Harbour, this popular 2km sandy beach is known for warm waters, a great spot for swimming, playing in the sand, flying a kite or a leisurely walk. As a photographer, my favourite time of day at the beach is “golden hour” just before the sun goes down. The warm glow of the sunset really brings the beautiful sand dunes to life.

Town of Pictou area:

In 2023, The Town of Pictou is celebrating two important anniversaries: 150 years since the incorporation of the town on April 30, 1873, and 250 years of the historic arrival of the Ship Hector from Scotland on September 15, 1773. Events and activities commemorating these dates and the cultural history of the Mi’kmaq and Scottish people in Pictou County will be taking place throughout the year.

Home to the Ship Hector, a full-size replica of the ship that brought the first Scottish emigrants from Scotland to Nova Scotia in 1773, the Hector Heritage Quay is a museum that tells the story of this historic voyage. Explore the exhibits that depict the challenges the Scottish emigrants faced while establishing a new home. Hector Heritage Quay is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and anyone seeking to understand more about this chapter in Pictou County’s heritage.

This museum, located on the Pictou waterfront, is a captivating tribute to the region's rich maritime heritage. Explore exhibits that bring to life the captivating tales of hardworking people in the local fishing industry and their deep-rooted connection to the sea. 

The Touch Tank is a new addition to the museum this year! Museum staff are happy to show visitors these locally-donated, uniquely coloured lobsters.

This renowned knife manufacturer has been creating high-quality blades since 1957. From classic chef knives to specialized hunting blades, Grohmann Knives offers a diverse range of hand-crafted products. They have created a special knife celebrating the 250th anniversary of the arrival of the Ship Hector. Visit their showroom and take home a piece of Pictou County's culinary heritage!

Mrs. MacGregor’s Shortbreads
59 Water St, Pictou

Indulge in some sweet treats at Mrs. MacGregor's Shortbreads! Made using an old family recipe, these small-batch, melt-in-your-mouth shortbreads come in many different flavours, like Lemon Poppy Seed, Lavender & Lemon or (my personal favourite) Chocolate. This shop offers other locally-sourced foodie delights as well. Treat yourself to a taste of Pictou County's sweet side!

Featuring fresh, house-made dishes, locally crafted beer and liquor, and their own Salty Dog Brewing Company beer, this restaurant offers a view of the Pictou waterfront and is a great spot to enjoy a tasty meal with friends. On the weekends, you can enjoy live music! We ordered the Creamy Seafood Chowder (a stop on the Nova Scotia Chowder Trail) with a glass of Tidal Bay, and BBQ Bacon Burger with a local lager. We really enjoyed our meal sitting out on the sunny patio with a view of the ocean!

This beloved local spot for ice cream and sweet treats has a nostalgic ambiance and a huge variety of cold treats available. With over 60 flavours of soft-serve to choose from, as well as hard ice cream, milkshakes, slushies and sundaes, there’s something for everyone on a hot day! I admit, I visited a few times ;) My personal favourite is the salted caramel soft-serve.

This small, family owned and operated business is dedicated to producing superior quality, direct-from-the-farm lavender products. From browsing the delightful shop filled with lavender-infused products to strolling through the fragrant fields, every moment at Seafoam Lavender is a sensory delight. The vibrant purple gardens are at their peak late-July to early August when the lavender scent permeates the air, definitely worth a visit!

Located in the heart of River John, this charming cafe serves up homemade bakery treats, sandwiches, locally-roasted coffee and drinks. The warm and inviting atmosphere, coupled with friendly staff, creates a welcoming space where locals and visitors alike can gather and enjoy a relaxing dining experience. I needed a little pick-me-up and ordered a latte and chocolate oat square, it totally did the trick!

For a small province, the unique regional charms of Nova Scotia always offer a good time – and new things to discover. This part of the Northumberland Shore didn’t disappoint!

In Pictou County I found dedicated food producers, unforgettable local culinary experiences, talented artisans, and impressive craft beverages. It’s apparent that Pictou County people are proud of their heritage, their communities and how they are shaping their future.

So, get out there and enjoy Pictou county’s authentic, coastal experiences and delicious food — not to mention unparalleled maritime hospitality and broad sand beaches.

Also, don’t sleep in too late – they call it the Sunrise Trail for a reason!
